Homemade Feed for Large-Scale Dairy Farms: A Key Choice for Cost Reduction and Efficiency Improvement
News Center
Abstract: Feed costs are the core component of total production costs in large-scale dairy farms and directly determine farm profitability. This article uses a 6,000-head dairy farm as a case study, integrating data on the farm’s current feed consumption, the cost advantages and nutritional quality of homemade feed, and presenting key data in tables. Combined with the application of the UHAND Smart Feeding Center, the study demonstrates the feasibility of using homemade feed together with intelligent feeding equipment as the optimal path for reducing costs and improving efficiency in large-scale dairy farms, providing practical guidance for feed selection.
This study takes a 6,000-head dairy farm as a practical case and analyzes the application advantages of homemade feed based on feed consumption, cost savings, and nutritional impacts, focusing on cost and nutritional quality. The core data are summarized in the table below.
| Data Category | Specific Item | Core Data |
|---|---|---|
| Feed Consumption | Total number of dairy cows on the farm | 6,000 heads |
| Number and proportion of lactating cows | 50%, totaling 3,000 heads | |
| Daily feed consumption per lactating cow | 10 kg | |
| Total daily feed consumption of lactating cows | 30 tons (3,000 * 10 kg) | |
| Cost Data | Price difference per ton between homemade and purchased feed | Homemade feed saves 600 CNY/ton |
| Daily feed cost savings | 18,000 CNY/day (30 tons/day * 600 CNY/ton) | |
| Monthly feed cost savings (30 days) | 540,000 CNY (18,000 * 30) | |
| Annual feed cost savings (365 days) | ~6,570,000 CNY (18,000 * 365) | |
| UHAND Smart Feeding Center investment and payback period | Investment: 10 million CNY, payback ~1.5 years | |
| Nutritional Impact Data | Partial urea replacement of soybean meal (non-standard) | Milk yield decreases 8%-12%, milk quality decreases 9%-26% |
| Complete urea replacement of soybean meal (non-standard) | Milk yield decreases 21%-22%, milk quality decreases 9%-26% | |
| Daily crude protein requirement for high-producing cows | 13.5%-14.5% |
From a cost perspective, homemade feed can significantly reduce feed expenditure in large farms. In the case study, annual savings approach 6.57 million CNY. The UHAND Smart Feeding Center has a short payback period, offering excellent long-term cost-effectiveness, and the savings directly translate into farm profit.
From a nutritional quality perspective, homemade feed eliminates the risks of non-standard urea replacement of soybean meal found in commercial feed, ensuring high-quality protein supply to meet the nutritional needs of high-producing cows and avoiding declines in milk yield and quality. When combined with the intelligent management provided by the UHAND Smart Feeding Center, feed formulation precision and feeding efficiency are further enhanced, making this approach the optimal path for cost reduction and efficiency improvement in large-scale dairy farms.
